# Custom attributes, tags, and tiers (VIP / Standard / New)

> Cura gives you three flexible ways to label and organize contacts — tiers, tags, and custom attributes — so your customer list reflects how your business actually works.

Cura gives you three flexible ways to label and organize contacts — **tiers**, **tags**, and **custom attributes** — so your customer list reflects how *your* business actually works. This guide shows you when to use each and how to set them up.

By the end, you'll know how to mark your VIPs, group customers by topic, and track the extra details that matter to your clinic or salon.

## Before you begin

* You'll need access to the **CRM** and the contact(s) you want to label.
* Decide what you actually want to track — a few well-chosen labels beat dozens of unused ones.

<Note>
  **Tiers** rank how valuable a customer is (a single choice). **Tags** group customers by topic (pick as many as you like). **Custom attributes** store specific facts unique to your business (like a field on a form).
</Note>

<Steps>
  <Step title="Set a tier (VIP / Standard / New)">
    Tiers tell you, at a glance, how important a customer is. Every contact can be one of three:

    * **VIP** — your most valuable customers, the ones to prioritize.
    * **Standard** — your regular customers.
    * **New** — recently arrived, not yet established.

    Open a contact and set the **tier** field on the profile. It's a single choice per contact.

    <Check>Your best customers now stand out — and you can pull them up instantly with the VIP Contacts segment.</Check>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add tags">
    Tags are free-form labels you can apply to as many contacts as you like, and a contact can carry several at once. Use them for topics, campaigns, or anything you want to group on later — e.g. `hair-loss`, `botox-interest`, `referred-by-staff`, `dec-promo`.

    * **Add a tag:** open the contact and add it in the **Tags** section.
    * **Reuse tags:** apply the same tag across many contacts so you can filter the whole group.

    <Check>You can now filter the contacts list by tag to see everyone who shares a label.</Check>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add custom attributes">
    When you need to track a specific fact that isn't a standard field, use a **custom attribute** — a named piece of information you define yourself. Think of it like adding your own field: "preferred branch", "skin type", "membership number".

    * Add custom attributes from the contact's **Details**.
    * Use clear, consistent names so the same fact is always stored the same way.

    <Check>Your contacts now hold the details unique to your business.</Check>
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Tiers vs. tags vs. attributes — which to use?

* **Tier:** *how valuable?* One choice: VIP, Standard, or New.
* **Tag:** *what group?* Many per contact, shared across people.
* **Custom attribute:** *what specific fact?* A named value, like a form field.

<Tip>
  Keep your tag list short and consistent. `vip-event` and `vip event` look the same to you but are two different tags to Cura — pick one spelling and stick to it.
